Residual Utterances

Residual Utterances is a presentation of new sculptural work from local sculptor Colin McIntyre, in conjunction with a soundscape inside his celebrated pipe organ sound chamber, The Resonant Lung. The sculptural installation inside the gallery exemplifies McIntyre’s signature abstract lifeforms. These pieces marry his mastery of metal working with his more recent interest in hot tar as a medium. He has spent much of his artistic career experimenting with imagined species that celebrate the wonders of adaptation in ecology. This work reflects on the limitations of human capacity for understanding the natural order outside of our disruptive species.

In recent years, McIntyre has re-entered artistic explorations with sound. The Resonant Lung, his latest aural project, is a sculpted sound chamber built into a shipping container with remnants of antique pipe organs controlled by modern digital interface. The Resonant Lung sits in the outdoor sculpture garden of Dimension Gallery.

The sculptures inside the gallery are engaged in an audible conversation with the soundscape in The Resonant Lung. The looped composition gives a voice and expanded context to the sculptures that are otherwise stationary and silent.

Since establishing his full time professional studio practice in Austin in 2001, McIntyre has received three public art grants including Arboreal Passage at the Austin Nature and Science Center, Emergence at Butler Park, and Perseverance at the University Hills Library. His work has been featured at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, the Museum of Vordingborg in Denmark, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans, and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. He won a Texas Biennial grant in 2009 as well as City of Austin Cultural Arts grants for 2013 – 2018. He is the co-founder and curator of Dimension Gallery, a contemporary sculpture gallery in East Austin.
